Barcelona Airport: frequently asked questions

Barcelona-El Prat has two terminals about 4 km apart, T1 and T2, linked by a free 24-hour shuttle bus, so the first thing to check is which one your flight uses. Into the city, the Aerobús takes about 35 minutes to Plaça Catalunya, the Metro needs the €5.70 Airport Ticket and a change of line, the train leaves only from T2, and a taxi costs at least €21.00.

Quick answer

Barcelona-El Prat (BCN) is run by Aena, about 15 km south-west of central Barcelona. T1 serves Vueling, Iberia and most long-haul airlines; T2, in sections T2A, T2B and T2C, mainly Ryanair, Transavia and easyJet, and a free shuttle links them around the clock. The Aerobús (A1 for T1, A2 for T2) runs 24 hours to Plaça Catalunya, Metro L9 Sud needs a €5.70 Airport Ticket, and taxis charge a €21.00 minimum from the airport. Aena's information line is +34 913 211 000.

Two. T1, open since 2009, takes most flights; T2 is one terminal split into three sections, T2A, T2B and T2C.

Which terminal does my airline use?

Usually T1 for Vueling, Iberia, LEVEL and most long-haul and full-service airlines, T2B for Ryanair and Transavia, and T2C for easyJet. Aena moves airlines between terminals from time to time, so your boarding pass decides.

Can I walk from T1 to T2?

No. About 4 km of road separate them, with no footpath and no airside link; Aena's free shuttle bus covers the distance day and night.

How often does the shuttle between terminals run, and where does it stop?

At its busiest, from 08:00 to 20:00, a bus leaves every 5 minutes; early morning and evening it is every 7, and after midnight every 10. It calls at T1 Floor 0 (arrivals), T1 Floor 3 (departures), T2B and T2C, and the ride lasts about 10 minutes towards T2 and 14 towards T1.

How long should I allow to change terminal?

15 to 20 minutes door to door, more at busy times. For a connection between flights in different terminals, add at least an hour.

Do any flights leave from T2A?

Not at present. T2A receives non-Schengen arrivals, and T2 departures check in at T2B or T2C; your boarding pass shows which.

Which gates are in which terminal?

Schengen flights board in T1 from A, B or C and in T2 from R, S or U. Flights leaving Schengen use D or E in T1 and W, Y or M in T2. Letters can change after check-in, so follow the screens and the gate map.

Getting into Barcelona

What is the easiest way from the airport to Plaça Catalunya?

The Aerobús, about 35 minutes, round the clock. Line A1 serves T1 and A2 serves T2, and in the city it stops at Plaça Espanya, Gran Via–Urgell, Sepúlveda–Urgell and Plaça Catalunya.

How much is the Aerobús?

€6.75 to €7.75 one way and €11.65 to €13.30 return (listed by travel sites in October 2026, not set by Aerobús); the ticket machine and Aerobús's website show the exact fare. Tickets are valid for 90 days and under-4s ride free.

Can I use a T-casual on the airport Metro?

No. The Aeroport T1 and Aeroport T2 stations on Metro L9 Sud need the €5.70 Airport Ticket, or a pass that includes the airport, such as the T-usual or the Hola Barcelona card. The T-familiar and T-grup do not work either.

Does the Metro go straight to the city centre?

No. L9 Sud needs a change, to L1 at Torrassa or to L5 at Collblanc; count 30 to 45 minutes to the centre in all. Trains run about every 7 minutes.

Does the train stop at Terminal 1?

No. The Rodalies R2 Nord stops only at the Aeroport station next to T2, reached on foot by a covered walkway. From T1, take the free shuttle to T2 first.

What is the cheapest way into Barcelona?

Is there public transport at night?

How do I get from the airport to Sants station?

The Rodalies R2 Nord goes there directly from T2 in 19 to 27 minutes. Starting at T1, either cross to T2 on the shuttle bus or go by taxi.

How do I get to the cruise terminals?

A taxi is the simple way: a fixed €46 to Moll Adossat from either terminal, all supplements included. Public transport does not reach the ships; the public option is the Aerobús to the centre and then the port shuttle, as the cruise port section explains.

Taxis, Uber and Cabify

How much is a taxi from Barcelona airport to the centre?

On the meter, and never less than €21.00 from the airport, all supplements included. To Plaça Catalunya, expect about €30 to €39 and 20 to 30 minutes; that is an estimate from the AMB taxi tariff, not a fixed fare, and AMB's fare calculator gives a quote.

Is the taxi more expensive at night?

Yes. The T-2 rate of €1.66 per km applies on weekdays from 20:00 to 08:00, all day on Saturdays and on public holidays; the T-1 daytime rate is €1.35 per km. The €4.60 airport supplement applies in both directions.

Which is the cheapest official car park?

The Low-cost car park, and after it Long-stay, both served by a free shuttle. They take only cars with a prior booking and a flight from T1; Aena shows the price when you book.

Where are the car hire desks?

In T1 in the Floor 1 arrivals hall, with OK Mobility in La Plaza; in T2 every desk is in T2B, Floor 0. The same car hire brands are in both, plus Firefly at T2 only.

Can I drive a hire car into central Barcelona?

Usually, as long as the car has a DGT environmental label, which most Spanish hire cars carry; the ZBE low-emission zone restricts cars without one on weekdays. A foreign-plated car must be registered with the city first.

Check-in, security and passport control

How early should I get to Barcelona airport?

Aena's minimum is 45 minutes before departure. Two hours for a domestic or Schengen flight and three for any other flight is a sensible margin; your airline's check-in deadline comes first.

Do I still have to take liquids and laptops out of my bag?

Yes, at the standard lanes in both terminals and at the T2 Fast Lane, unless staff or signs say otherwise. At the T1 Fast Track lane, Aena lets electronics and liquids stay in the bag. The 100 ml limit per container applies everywhere.

Is there Fast Track at Barcelona, and how much is it?

Yes. T1 has Fast Track on Floor 3 from 04:00 to 23:00 for €16.55; T2 has Fast Lane at T2B and T2C, 24 hours, for €12.35. Each covers security only, per person and per access.

Will my fingerprints be taken when I land?

If you are a non-EU national on a short stay, arriving from outside Schengen, yes: the EU Entry/Exit System registers your face and fingerprints at passport control. UK citizens count as non-EU.

Connecting flights

Can I connect between T1 and T2 without leaving the airport?

No. The change is always landside: out of the first terminal, onto the shuttle and through security again at the second. It may also mean passport control and collecting your bags, so confirm with your airline and allow at least an extra hour.

Will my bags go through to my final destination?

On a single ticket they normally do. On separate tickets you collect them, leave and check in again, possibly in the other terminal; the baggage connections section covers both cases.

Baggage, left luggage and lost property

Is there left luggage at Barcelona airport?

Yes. Excess Baggage keeps left luggage on Floor 0 of each terminal, never closing in T1 and open from 06:00 to 22:00 in T2; prices are at the desk.

My suitcase did not arrive. What do I do?

Before leaving the reclaim hall, file a Property Irregularity Report at the desk of your airline's handling agent and keep the reference. Then claim in writing from the airline, within 21 days for a delayed bag or 7 days for damage.

How big can my cabin bag be?

Whatever your airline allows: size, weight and number are airline rules, not the airport's. Check your booking.

Where is lost property at Barcelona airport?

On T1 Floor 1. One Aena office holds what is found in both terminals; ring +34 932 596 440 or write to [email protected], Monday to Saturday between 08:00 and 18:00.

Which lounge can I use?

One in your own terminal and zone: Pau Casals for Schengen gates in T1, Joan Miró for T1's non-Schengen gates, Colomer for the Barcelona–Madrid air shuttle and Canudas, the only one in T2. A walk-in visit costs €48.00 per adult, or €51.26 at Joan Miró, and covers up to 3 hours before your flight; each lounge is described in full.

Does Priority Pass work at Barcelona?

Only if your card and plan cover a Barcelona lounge: check its app for the lounges it lists. If none is listed, Aena's walk-in price applies.

Is the Wi-Fi free?

Yes. Join "Airport Free Wifi Aena" and register with an email or an Aena Club account; confirm the email within 15 minutes and the Wi-Fi then has no time limit.

Can I change money at any hour?

Yes, at Global Exchange's public office in T1 and its T2B departures office, both open 24 hours. CaixaBank also changes money at its branches in T1 La Plaza and the T2B arrivals hall.

Only after security, in the outdoor smoking areas of the T1 Floor 1 North and South courtyards and on T2 Floor 1.

Where can I take a shower?

At Air Rooms by Sleep & Fly on T1 Floor 1, open 24 hours, which sells a one-hour shower, or in the Pau Casals, Joan Miró and Canudas lounges.

Is there food after security in T2?

Yes, though T2 has less choice: about 20 food and drink outlets in T2 as a whole, against more than 30 in T1, and the two cannot be reached from each other airside. The restaurants list both.

Duty-free, VAT refunds and customs

Do I get duty-free prices on a flight within the EU?

No. The destination decides, not the gate: leaving the EU gets duty-free prices, while flights to EU countries pay normal prices. Switzerland boards at a Schengen gate but is outside the EU, and so is the UK.

How do I claim a VAT refund at Barcelona airport?

If you live outside the EU, or in the Canary Islands, Ceuta or Melilla, validate the DIVA tax-free form at a kiosk in the T1 or T2 check-in area before you check in the goods, with the goods to hand, and leave the EU within three months. Ask the shop about any minimum spend before you pay; the VAT refund steps are detailed separately.

How much cash can I carry without declaring it?

Less than €10,000. From €10,000 per person, in cash or other means of payment, you must declare it to customs when entering or leaving Spain.

What can I bring in from outside the EU duty-free?

Goods worth up to €430, or €150 for children under 15, plus separate limits for alcohol and tobacco; your own medicines do not count.

Special assistance and Meet & Assist

How do I book wheelchair assistance?

Tell your airline when you book and register the request with Aena at least 48 hours before departure: +34 913 211 000 from 07:00 to 00:00, [email protected], Aena's website or app. The Barrier Free service is free.

Where do I meet the assistance staff?

At one of 17 call points with an intercom, in T1, T2, the car parks and the Rodalies station, no later than 2 hours before departure; Aena asks you to reach the airport 2.5 hours early.

Can I pay for someone to take me through the airport?

Yes, with Aena's Meet & Assist: an escort on departure, arrival or a connection, with priority at security and lounge time. Book at least 48 hours ahead with a valid ticket; Aena shows the price when you book.

Travel tips

  • Before you leave home, look up your terminal and pick the Aerobús line, Metro station or car park that matches it.
  • Buy the Metro Airport Ticket at the station machine; a T-casual bought in the city will not open the gate.
  • Save Aena's line, +34 913 211 000, and the lost property number in your phone before you travel.
  • Install the Aena app: Aena Maps finds desks, toilets and cash machines from where you stand.
  • On a connection between T1 and T2, ask your airline at booking whether your bags are checked through.
  • Keep a taxi receipt until the end of your trip; it carries the licence number needed for any claim.
